How warm and cool undertones, light and fixed finishes shape paint choices, with tips for building a palette.
Every color has an undertone, a hint of warmth or coolness beneath the surface. A white can lean yellow, pink, green or blue, and a gray can look purple next to the wrong floor. Undertones interact with the light in your room and with the finishes that stay, such as flooring, counters, tile and brick.
A good palette starts with fixed elements, then builds outward. We look at floors, counters and large furniture, choose a set of colors that share an undertone family and test large samples in morning and evening light. Nashville homes often have warm wood floors and brick, which can make cool grays look flat. We design palettes that connect rooms and plan sheens for walls, trim and ceilings.
