A federal program with rules for renovation work in older buildings that may contain lead-based paint.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency runs the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Program, often called the RRP rule. It was created because lead-based paint was banned in homes in 1978, and it aims to reduce exposure to lead hazards when renovation work disturbs paint in older buildings. The rule includes requirements for contractors, and the agency provides guidance for homeowners, property managers and others.
We are an independent firm and are not part of the agency. We explain in plain language why older homes need extra care during renovation and point you to the official site for the rules. When a project involves sanding, demolition or paint removal in a pre-1978 home, we suggest asking your contractor about lead-safe practices before work begins. We plan sequencing, protection and finishes so the renovation can proceed safely.
